How to Cook Sheepshead Fish? (Baked, Grilled, Fried, Sushi, Rolls)

Don’t panic. Cooking sheepshead is relatively easy. The process is very similar to other fishes that are close to them.

My favorite way to cook them is to ground them up, make them into fireballs, fry them on a stick, or boil them and slice them into a soup. Also, the easiest way is to fry.

Baked Sheepshead Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound mild-flavored sheepshead fillet (skinless)
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted (you can use olive oil well)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a bowl, mix together all the ingredients.
  3. Place the fish fillet in the bowl, making sure it’s coated evenly.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes or until fish is cooked through.
  5. Serve immediately.

Grilled Sheepshead Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 fish fillets
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Sea salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the grill to medium heat.
  2. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Rub mixture all over the fish fillets.
  3. Grill the fish for 3 to 4 minutes per side or until browned and cooked through.
  4. Remove from grill and let rest for 2 minutes before serving.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together lemon juice and Dijon mustard.
  6. Serve fish with lemon juice and mustard sauce on the side.

Fried Sheepshead Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound fish filet
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Combine flour, salt, and pepper in a shallow dish.
  2. Dip fish in egg, then coat in flour mixture.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add fish to the skillet and cook for about 4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through. Serve hot.

Sheepshead Sushi

Ingredients:

  • Raw sheepshead fish (layered)
  • Short grain sushi rice
  • 1 slice of avocado
  • 1 sheet of nori (seaweed)
  • 1 tablespoon wasabi paste
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Instructions:

  1. Cook the sushi rice according to package instructions.
  2. Lay out the nori on a sushi mat or a plate.
  3. Place the sushi rice onto a plate and top with your desired fish item.
  4. Slice the avocado and place it next to the fish.
  5. Sprinkle with soy sauce, wasabi paste, and sugar to taste.
  6. Roll up the sushi and the ingredients present within.
  7. Serve immediately with sauces.

Sheepshead Rolls

Coating ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Mayo
  • 1 tablespoon Mustard
  • 1 Stalk Celery
  • Parsley
  • 1 tsp Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tsp Smoked Paprika

Process:

  1. Fillet of a firm white flesh fish.
  2. Poach it in salt water
  3. Remove fillets and drain, lightly salt, and season, if desired refrigerate overnight after cooling.
  4. Make the coating.
  5. Stir the ingredients in before adding on the fish, and serve on buttered rolls.
